SURAH YUSUF – A SURAH CONTAINING MANY LESSONS IN THE ‘STORY OF YUSUF AND HIS BROTHERS’ FOR THE ONES WHO INQUIRE
Qur’an is sent to make things clear and help us to live a life in a way that Allah wants us to live. We have to ponder on the ayahs of Qur’an to comprehend the message Allah has sent for us Muslims. Because it tells us what to do in our everyday matters. We have to focus on the message and try to live our life according to it.
Every ayah of this surah is amazing and worth mentioning. As the surah starts Allah says
1. We Should Not Have Hatred And Jealousy For Anyone. It Does Not Help Us Achieve Our Goals
AYAH 9 and 10 collectively tells about the plan Yusuf’s brother were making against Yusuf. They had hatred for Yusuf and their planning against Yusuf shows their hatred well. If we truly want to seek the lesson from Quran we should understand that these ayats remind us to not hate our sibling. Because hatred is going to help us anyway in achieving what we want to achieve. Yusuf’s brothers wanted their father to love them more by taking Yusuf away from him but this story of Quran tells us that they did not achieve their goal.
2. Do Not Make False Promises Just To Get Your Work Done. Even When You Know That You Are Not Going To Fulfil.
Yusuf’s brother came to father and asked to take Yusuf with them for playing Yusuf’s father told them that he is worried that they will engage in their playing and a wolf will eat his son and they, in reply said:
Ayah 14: “If a wolf could eat him despite our number, then surely we would be useless individuals”.
3. Do Not Lie
Ayah 17 and 18 tells the lie Yusuf’s brother spoke to their father on returning from their journey after throwing Yusuf in a well. They lied to their father that they went busy in playing and a wolf ate Yusuf and they brought the shirt of Yusuf with false blood on it. They lied just to hide the wrong they did.
4. When You Commit Something Wrong, Admit It. Do Not Blame Others.
Ayah 25 tells about the behavior of the wife of the minister when she tried to seduce Yusuf and Yusuf refused to get involved in her sin and her husband come home while she is behind Yusuf trying to fulfil her desires. But when her husband comes she instead of admitting her was wrong she blames Yusuf for the act.
5. When You Are Right, Stand Up And Defend Yourself.
Yusuf was the slave in minister’s house, when accused of the sin he did not keep silent due to fear of minister or due to the thought that he is just a slave of the minister. He rather stood up for himself and told the minister that her wife was trying to seduce him he was not the one.
6. Even If You Are Right, You May Suffer. It Is A Test From ALLAH. And ALLAH Tests His Believers.
Ayah 35 tells that even though Yusuf was right and after seeing all the evidence that proved that he is innocent he was sent to prison. But as the story ends we come to know that indeed going to prison benefitted him. And Allah does test his believers and rewards them in the end after their patience. So, do not lose hope in Allah.
