SSL, which means “Secure Socket Layers” has going viral among all the webmasters. Even half of the websites have applied SSL without knowing the fact that the SSL certificate has disadvantages. Everything has some advantages and disadvantages, so SSL also got some real disadvantages which could be catastrophic for your website.
I have done a lot of research in SSL on the website, even I applied it on my website too. So, after the tenure of approximately 2 months, I have come across that it is not my thing. But SSL is mandatory for the websites such as Online store, Charity websites, and other things which include personal information sharing because SSL provides encryption so it’s beneficial for their websites.
If you own an entertainment blog, such as this one, then I don’t think you need to have SSL on your website as it doesn’t promote sharing of every individual as well as it does not sell anything.
1. No Going Back
After I applied SSL on my website which drove the address from HTTP to HTTPS. After few days, when my Adsense got approved, i put the ads on my blog and it started misbehaving. As all of us know Adsense is a charm for all the website owner, and yes SSL misbehaved!
After that when I removed the SSL from my website, it caused me so much trouble that I could not log in to the website, so eventually, I had to renew my website! This is one of the biggest Disadvantages of SSL.
So before applying SSL this is to be noticed that, if you’re going to apply this, then you have to stick with it, forever, which means buying of certificates every year and continues bug troubleshooting. TOO MUCH WORK!
2. Reduction In Website Speed
Redirecting from HTTP to HTTPS because of the implementation of SSL can slow down your website when you see traffic from all around the world. Because when you apply SSL on your website, you’re basically creating a chain of layers through which your data gets enrypted, which is possibly the main reason that slow downs your website. That is also the reason which misbehaves when your implement Adsense code on your website.
3. Cache Problems
If you use W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache or Cloudflare standard caching, then you’re in trouble! How ? let me explain. If you’re using SSL and you post any article, it will take time (the time you set on your caching service) to update it. While if you post it without posting an SSL then it will be updated instantly without causing any trouble with your caching service or plugin.
4. Costly Service
A good SSL service will cost you around $110 per year, which means, you have to get it every year. While, there is Cloudflare, which is providing free SSL, but that’s not effective at all, and you need to have the technical expertise to have a green bar with a padlock activated on your website. All of this SSL work requires huge work and technical experts. People like me, who are not technical expert find it difficult to troubleshoot these bugs. This is also one of the major Disadvantages of SSL.
5. Hassle in Renewal of Certificate
Once your SSL certificate goes expire, your website will have a crash! people will find it difficult to visit your website, which can affect your Adsense, Alexa rank as well as the reduction in google ranking. This is considered as one of the main Disadvantages of SSL.
And it needs a technical expert to do this certificate installation for you, if you have a big website, then you need to hire someone to do this for you, so obviously they will take MONEY for doing this work for you.
