People often say that an image is worth a thousand words, but in the case of this photo of 16 month old Mohammed Shohayet, it may be that a photo is also representative of the loss of thousands of lives.
In a time of great turmoil for many Muslims across the globe, this photo of the body of a Rohingya infant, who drowned while his family attempted to escape brutality in Myanmar and flee to Bangladesh, is again putting a very real and very tragic face to the suffering of thousands of Muslims worldwide.
This boys family was among many of the Rohingya people, a Muslim population indigenous to Myanmar, that are fleeing to Bangladesh in order to escape horrific persecution by their majority Bhuddist government. Innumerable reports of systematic destruction, rape, mutilation, torture, and all out genocide of the Rohingya people have been given by survivors, as Bangladesh struggles to cope with the incoming flood of refugees.
However, while humanitarian groups in the area call for additional aid and support, it is falling on deaf ears. While Mohammed Shohayet’s father morns the painful loss of his son, he hopes that this final photo of him may help to bring dome much needed attention to the terrible plight of the Rohingya people.
